The Bigge Crane and Rigging Southern California branch has taken part in an emergency elevated drill with the fire and safety department at a refinery in El Segundo, California, USA.
The refinery is part of the Coker Reliability project, where a structure is being installed in preparation for the drum replacement. To carry out the work two Liebherr LR 1300 lattice boom crawler cranes are being used. For the project the cranes are configured with a 43 metre main boom and a 46 metre luffing jib; this is to enable them to reach over the coke pit on the west side and also the unit’s operation systems on the east side, the company said.
For the emergency drill, a rescue basket had to be placed onto the North side 50 metre deck. The drill was carried out in preparation of an injured personnel emergency retrieval.
“The rescue operation was well planned and ran as smoothly as possible”, said Randy Cooper, managing contractor. “The location of the crane and the radius of the lift have been pre-determined to ensure an efficient rescue if the needs arises.”
