A new double boom system to increase the lifting capacity of lattice boom cranes has been launched by Liebherr in Germany. Capacity can be increased by more than 50% “with relatively little effort,” the manufacturer said.
JPW Riggers, Inc. Syracuse, N.Y., recently acquired a Terex AC 500-2 all-terrain crane to assist with its wind turbine work at the Maple Ridge Wind Farm in Lowville, N.Y. The AC 500-2 served as an alternative to the lattice boom crawler cranes JPW typically uses for wind turbine construction and servicing.
The incident occurred under a highway overpass when the crane’s superstructure seems to have slewed over the side of the truck causing it to lose stability. The crane appears to be an old Lima lattice truck crane and if so must be somewhere around 30 years old – if not more.

Usabiaga Liebherr in spectacular roof lift
At the beginning of July a convoy of low-loaders pulled out of the Liebherr plant at Ehingen in Germany, carrying the components of an LR 11350 crawler crane. The destination was the Basque city of Vitoria-Gasteiz in northern Spain. That was where the new crane, owned by Usabiaga, made its first lift.
Shuttlelift launches double-beam mobile gantry cranes
US crane manufacturer Shuttlelift has a new series of double-beam mobile gantry cranes. The rubber-tyred DB Series is available in six models, from the 60,000 pound (27 tonne) capacity DB 30 to the 400,000 pound (181 tonne) capacity DB 200. The 140,000 pound (63.5 tonne) capacity DB 70, in standard configuration, has a hook height of 25 feet (7.62 metres). Its clear span is 35 feet (10.67 m) and it is has a 27 foot (8.23 m) wheelbase.
The first unit has now been delivered to German based crane company Mayer headquartered in the town of Burgberg in the south of the country. The company put the crane straight to work on a difficult and complicated job, replacing the starting ramps of one of the two ski jumps in Oberstdorf in the Bavarian Alps.
Liebherr has extended the on-site fully rigged mobility of its 600 tonne LR 1600/2-W narrow-track crawler crane. The crane can now move with up to 108 metres of main boom and a 12-metre fixed jib.
The following is a brief selection of safety considerations, more information on this subject can be found in the relevant BS Codes of Practice . A tower crane should only be erected or dismantled and tested by competent persons, i.e. an engineer and erection crew trained in the erection and dismantling of that type of tower crane.
