The accused were described as “reckless” by district attorney Cyrus Vance, who said that their alleged negligence with the tower crane on the 333 East 91st Street construction site, led directly to the deaths of two construction workers.

All 12 workers had been rescued by 14:00 with one said to be suffering from life threatening injuries.

Mr. Vecchio was an employee with the City of Sault Ste. Marie Board of Works and was working on an excavation project at the landfill site area at the time of the incident

A 20 year old tractor driver also died at the scene, but it is unclear if he was in his vehicle at the time and how it relates to the crane accident. Local reports say that the crane collapsed from its base and that the weather was very stormy at the time with strong winds

This operator was lucky. Canada has a great inspection system. But we can’t be running these very old cranes. A couple of years ago I saw some old Lindens and Krolls from the 60’s up and running in Victoria. I know it feels like a waste, but they have to go.
