Crane accident at nuclear plant
Two men were injured on Saturday at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan, while assembling a crawler crane. The men were installing the crane’s back mast using another crawler crane.
Welti-Furrer Pneukran & Spezialtransporte has erected a 2.3 megawatt Enercon E-70 wind turbine at an altitude of 2,465 metres, near the border between Switzerland and Italy. The work was completed on behalf of German company Enercon.
Firefighters have rescued a tower crane operator who collapsed in his crane cab, about 35 metres above a site in north-east London today. Around 20 firefighters were called to the scene in Hertford Road, Hackney this morning.
Crane operator fatality at Tilbury
A crane operator died earlier today after the crane he was operating overturned at Tilbury Docks in the UK. We do not know what type of crane, but do know that it had an elevated cab and that it turned over onto its side.

Crane professionals from all the western provinces and many from the United States attended the two-day event being held in Edmonton, Alberta. Most noteworthy was a strong contingent from the oil sands in Fort McMurray, Alberta.
Indicative of both wind power’s continued maturation and the importance the industry places on the safety of its greatest asset, today the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) entered into an official Alliance to further protect the health and safety of the industry’s workers.
The Revised COP provides practical guidance to the industry as to how to use tower cranes safely and properly with a view to assisting duty holders in preventing accidents as well as complying with the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance and the Factories and Industrial Undertakings (Lifting Appliances and Lifting Gear) Regulations. The revision mainly involves incorporation of the good practices recommended in the second version of the Guidelines on Safety of Tower Cranes published by the Construction Industry Council into the COP, with a view to further enhancing the safety of tower crane operation.
Mobile harbour cranes re-start work at New Mangalore Port
Almost after a gap of more than a month, mobile harbour cranes began functioning at the New Mangalore port from the second shift on Tuesday. The mobile harbour crane operators, whose five-year contract term came to an end on September 3, had stopped operations since September 4.
The 20 metre high Potain crane, had been working on the construction of a car park. A mobile crane from Waikato cranes was preparing to remove the jib when something went wrong and the jib fell into Pembroke Street. It was still attached to the tower, but the pendants clearly were not. We do not know if its slings that gave way or the erectors made a mistake in the sequence of dismantling?
